What to Expect in Your First EMDR Session

A common misconception about EMDR is that your first session dives straight into processing traumatic memories. In practice, the first session — and often several after it — looks quite different, and much less intense than people expect.

Your First Session Is Mostly Conversation

Expect your first EMDR session to focus on history-taking: your therapist will ask about your background, current concerns, and what you're hoping to get from treatment. No bilateral stimulation or memory processing happens yet. This session helps your therapist understand your full picture and identify appropriate targets for later work.

Building Resources Before Processing Begins

Before touching any difficult material, your therapist will help you build grounding and stabilization skills — resources you can draw on during and between processing sessions. This might include:

  • Identifying a "safe" or calm place you can visualize

  • Practicing simple grounding techniques

  • Learning to recognize your own window of tolerance

This preparation phase isn't a delay tactic — it's what makes the processing phases, when they begin, safe and effective rather than overwhelming.

Questions Your Therapist Will Likely Ask

  • What brings you to therapy now, and what are you hoping will be different?

  • What's your history with the concern you're bringing?

  • Do you have existing coping strategies, and how well do they work?

  • Are there any current stressors or safety concerns to be aware of?

When Does the "EMDR Part" Actually Start?

Once enough stability and rapport are established — sometimes after just one or two sessions, sometimes longer depending on your history — your therapist will move into identifying a specific target memory and beginning reprocessing. You'll always know before this happens; it's a collaborative decision, not a surprise.

It's Okay to Ask Questions

A good EMDR therapist welcomes questions about the process itself. If something feels unclear or you're nervous about what's coming, saying so is part of the process working as intended.
